Meet Mrs Bee

Mrs Bee, known as Nancy, is the creative driving force behind the sewing classes offered by Sew Mrs Bee. With a lifelong passion for sewing and a particular interest in pattern drafting, Nancy brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to her teaching.

Costume Making Experience

For nearly three decades, Nancy has been dedicated to making costumes, primarily serving the re-enacting, LARP, and theatre communities on a global scale. Her impressive portfolio includes work for opera companies such as English National Opera, Octagon Theatre, and the Royal Opera House. While her expertise is centred on 18th and 19th-century menswear, she has also crafted garments from earlier periods and occasionally designs female costumes.

Qualifications and Teaching Experience

Nancy holds an NDD in Fashion & Design and an HND in Theatrical Costume Interpretation. In 2021, she completed an MA in Historical Costume. She has shared her considerable knowledge as a Visiting Tutor at Arts University Bournemouth, teaching BA Costume and Performance Design & Film Costume students the essential processes and skills involved in costume construction.

The Sew Mrs Bee Venture

In October 2024, Nancy relocated to Coda and, in early 2025, launched her secondary business, Sew Mrs Bee. Although still in its early stages, this venture offers an exciting opportunity for Nancy to share her expertise and help others create bespoke pieces of clothing. She currently teaches both adults and children, focusing on the fundamentals of using a sewing machine and pattern drafting tailored to individual body shapes.

The Sew Mrs Bee Sewing Group Experience

All Sew Mrs Bee groups are designed to create a warm and inclusive atmosphere. Nancy ensures that everyone feels welcome and comfortable while participating. The primary aim is to promote the enjoyment of sewing. Whilst making the process both accessible and engaging for individuals of all skill levels.

Through hands-on sewing activities, participants develop their manual dexterity and enhance their cognitive skills. The act of sewing requires focus and precision, which not only refines fine motor abilities but also stimulates problem-solving and creative thinking. Together, these aspects contribute positively to mental well-being, offering a rewarding and therapeutic experience.

In addition to the practical benefits, Sew Mrs Bee groups emphasise the value of social interaction. Group sewing sessions provide opportunities to connect with others who share similar interests, fostering a sense of community and support. This social element further enriches the overall experience, delivering emotional benefits alongside skill development.
